For an hour it was a contest. The Barbarians, all flair and width, traded blows with a Springbok side feeling its way into the game — and for long stretches the invitational outfit looked like they belonged.
Then the champions did what champions do. A tightened set-piece, a kicking game that pinned the Barbarians in their own half, and the bench arriving in a wave: the match tilted in the space of ten minutes and never tilted back.
The pack laid the platform — dominant at the scrum, relentless at the breakdown — and the back three punished every half-chance. By the final quarter the margin was emphatic, the kind of scoreline that flatters no one and tells the truth about the gulf in depth.
